The da Vinci Surgical Robot is changing the game for complex surgery by using a minimally evasive approach. It allows surgeons to perform complex and delicate procedures with great precision by using very small incisions.
Dr. Patrick J. Kenney, a general surgeon at Rapid City Regional Hospital, said that the robot offers many advantages.
“Instead of having to stand over the patient - which for long, difficult cases is hard on us from an ergonomic standpoint - instead of standing over the position, the robot stands over the position, and we sit next to the patient,” Kenney said.
As the robot gets in position over the patient and the surgeon is ready, the operation begins.
It’s like a video game. Dr. Kenney controls the da Vinci at a console, where he uses his hands to control the robot’s actions.
