Medical Imaging

Medical science has made great strides in the treatment of complex human ailments. However, the first step in treating an illness is making an accurate diagnosis. Medical imaging technology and other diagnostic tools assist physicians in quickly diagnosing and determining the best treatment options for patients.

Monument Health medical imaging and radiology professionals work closely with physicians to provide the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, utilizing the lowest possible radiation dose. Our team works diligently to provide quick turnaround times. Most imaging services are also available on the weekend for patients’ convenience.

Our Services

Radiology (X-Ray)

X-rays produce images of the structures inside the body such as bones, soft tissue and organs. As X-ray beams pass through the body, tissues absorb or reflect the rays at different rates, depending on density. That produces the X-ray image. For some types of X-rays, a contrast medium* is used to provide greater detail on the images.

* A contrast medium, also called a contrast agent or contrast media, helps distinguish or contrast selected areas of the body from surrounding tissue. By improving the visibility of specific organs, blood vessels or tissues, a contrast medium helps physicians diagnose medical conditions.

Computerized Tomography (CT)

A CT scan combines a series of X-ray views taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional images that may be viewed individually or combined to create 3D images. CT technology is very versatile in imaging many structures of the body and may be enhanced using contrast media*.

* Contrast media, also called a contrast agent or contrast medium, help distinguish or contrast selected areas of the body from surrounding tissue. By improving the visibility of specific organs, blood vessels or tissues, contrast media help physicians diagnose medical conditions.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body. These images may be combined to produce 3D images that can be viewed from different angles. MRI is used to view nerves, muscles, ligaments, bones and other tissues in the body. MRI exams do not involve radiation exposure.

Digital Mammography

Mammograms are X-ray images of breast tissue. Mammograms play a key role in early breast cancer detection and help decrease breast cancer deaths. The images are used by a radiologist to detect any changes or abnormalities. Mammography is used for both screening and diagnostic purposes. 3D mammography services are available in each of our Monument Health markets: Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish and Sturgis.

Ultrasound

An ultrasound device uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images (known as a sonogram) of structures within the body. The images provide information that is valuable in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions. Ultrasounds are used to view the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver and other organs, in addition to examining the fetus during pregnancy. Ultrasound can also be used to evaluate the heart, which is called an echocardiogram. An ultrasound does not involve radiation exposure.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine procedures use small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose a variety of diseases. Radioactive material is introduced into the body and accumulates in the area of interest. The radioactive material gives off energy in the form of gamma rays that are detected by a camera and converted into images. Physicians can collect images of function throughout the entire body, uncovering abnormalities that might otherwise go undetected.

Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)

Also called bone densitometry, DEXA uses a small amount of ionizing radiation to produce images of bony structures, typically of the lower spine and hips, for the measurement of bone loss. DEXA is effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.

Digital Mammography

Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Fortunately, digital mammography technology allows physicians to focus on areas of concern.
