RAPID CITY, S.D. – Billie Jo Lewis, Registered Nurse on the medical-surgical unit at Regional Health Orthopedic & Specialty Hospital in Rapid City, has been recognized with the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses across the United States who go above and beyond for their patients and community.
Lewis was nominated by two patients who recognized her compassion, empathy, kindness to patient families and ability to educate the patient. According to one of the nominators, Billie Jo often went out of her way to make her patients feel better.
“When reading that the DAISY Award was for extraordinary nurses for the extraordinary work they do every day at the bedside, I instantly thought of Billie Jo. She is a stellar example of how nurses should strive to be. I believe she kept my family and me at the center of my care,” the patient said.
Another patient added, “She’s like the grandma that you go to when you need to talk or a pick-me-up. … I nicknamed her ‘drill sergeant’ because she used to be in the service.”
The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses recognizes those who display dedication to the health and wellness of their patients. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The DAISY Award continues to recognize and celebrate the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and their families every day.
