RAPID CITY, S.D. (May 12, 2017) – Rapid City Regional Hospital is proud to announce Shahid Ahmad, M.D., as the recipient of the Anton Hyden Award from the USD Sanford School of Medicine in Vermillion. Dr. Ahmad is a hospitalist at Rapid City Regional Hospital who earned his medical degree from the Kasturba Medical College in Karnataka, India, and completed his internal medicine residency at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee.
“Dr. Ahmad represents the ideal educator in medicine,” said USD Sanford School of Medicine student Nathan Truex. “He is deeply invested in the medical and personal development of his students and has inspired all of us to become not only high-quality physicians but high-quality people.”
Dr. Ahmad was selected by the junior and senior classes. The award is given to a School of Medicine professor who has inspired, supported, and mentored students during their clinical rotations. The award is in memory of Dr. Anton Hyden, a urologist who dedicated much of his career to teaching.
“I’m extremely grateful to be a part of this great institution and wonderful health care organization,” said Ahmad. “It’s an absolute honor to win this award. I come from an academic family, and my father always told me that one of the best ways to give back to medicine, to really make a difference in this amazing profession, is by contributing to the training of those following you. I not only want students to learn medicine but the art of truly caring for humans that are trusting us with their lives. It’s an honor just to be a part of each student’s individual journey.”
Dr. Ahmad was recognized at the Graduation Convocation for the Class of 2017 on Friday, May 5, for his outstanding achievement. Nominations for the award were received from all three clinical rotation locations: Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Yankton. A faculty physician from the Rapid City campus has earned this award in six of the last nine years.
