RAPID CITY, S.D. (March 8, 2017)–Rapid City Regional Hospital is among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for delivering high-quality care in at least 21 of the 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Rapid City Regional Hospital is among two South Dakota hospitals to receive the Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™.  Patients treated in hospitals receiving this award have, on average, a lower risk of complications or dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the designation.

“Delivering safe, high-quality care is a top priority at Rapid City Regional Hospital,” said Regional Health Chief Operating Officer Paulette Davidson, who also is serving as the interim president for the hospital and Rapid City market.

Rapid City Regional Hospital is one of only 258 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. Those 258 stand out among nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care.

According to Healthgrades, what differentiates distinguished hospitals from the rest is that while many hospitals have specific areas of expertise and high-quality outcomes for some conditions and procedures, these hospitals exhibit comprehensive and consistent quality across a range of conditions and procedures.

Healthgrades measures mortality for conditions like stroke, heart attacks and sepsis, an infection that progresses to become life threatening.

Complications are measured for procedures such as knee and hip surgery, gallbladder removal, and carotid surgery.

The analysis was based on more than 45 million Medicare medical claims records for the most recent three-year time period available for hospitals across the U.S.
