Custer doctor to lead statewide organization

CUSTER, S.D. (Feb. 5, 2019) – Dr. Lisa Brown, a Family Medicine specialist at Monument Health Custer Hospital and Clinic, is the new president of the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians. She became the organization’s president during the SDAFP winter seminar, which ended Saturday in Deadwood.

“Family practice physicians have a strong state and national organization, and I’m honored to serve as the SDAFP president in the coming year,” Dr. Brown said.

SDAFP is a statewide organization dedicated to improving the health of patients, families and communities by serving the needs of its members with professionalism and creativity. It is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Brown said the national organization is a strong advocate for family medicine in medical school training, residency training, reimbursement and other issues that affect the specialty.

The South Dakota association has over 500 members and is focused on education for its physician, medical resident and medical student members. Dr. Brown said the South Dakota chapter is frequently recognized for its continuing medical education (CME) programs.  The chapter is also involved in advocacy at both the state and national level representing its 324 active family medicine physician members as well as the students and residents.

The winter seminar in Deadwood included 2 1/2 days of education programs. It’s also a family oriented gathering, and members bring their children to enjoy skiing and other activities in the Northern Hills.

As a chapter president, Dr. Brown will travel to an AAFP Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo., the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. and the AAFP Congress of Delegates in Philadelphia, PA.
