Family Medicine Residency Program Details

The program was developed for western South Dakota to develop physicians who can provide broad-based, high-quality, primary care in a rural setting. The program is affiliated with the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota.

Residents receive extensive post-graduate level education in the medical and surgical disciplines, including the practice of obstetrics, with most residents delivering more than 100 babies during their training. Several other health care specialists provide additional educational support for our residents, including a registered dietitian, doctor of pharmacology and clinical psychologist.

Residents are benefit-eligible and accumulate 32 days of paid leave per year. We provide a meal allowance and cover moving expenses. We’ll also take care of your professional membership dues and reimburse you for your board examination.

Residents provide comprehensive care for their panel of patients with outpatient clinic time increasing over the three years of residency training. PGY-1 residents are scheduled for 1-2 half days per week of clinic time, PGY-2 residents are scheduled for 2-3 half days per week, and PGY-3 residents are scheduled for 4-5 half days per week.

Overnight call is shared by the senior (PGY-2 and PGY-3) residents. These residents are scheduled for two half-month blocks of night float each year. Weekend call is shared by all residents. The weekend team includes two PGY-1 and one senior resident. A faculty physician rounds daily and is available as a back-up for on-call issues. The on-call faculty staffs all procedures, OB deliveries, hospital admissions and is available for other issues upon resident request.

To simulate group practice, the residents, faculty physicians and clinic staff are organized in a team structure to share patient care, educational meetings and staff meetings. Teams provide continuity of care to their assigned patient panel and this fosters a cooperative atmosphere among its members.

Didactic and case presentation conferences are integrated into the educational experience and are a very important part of the residents’ overall training. A comprehensive conference schedule is developed and coordinated by the Chief Residents.

Ongoing clinical research is conducted by full-time faculty members. Residents contribute to current projects or work to develop and implement new projects. Residents may also contribute to the body of medical knowledge by conducting an extensive literature review and preparing a review article for submission for publication.
