Medical Imaging/Radiology

Regional Health offers state-of-the-art medical imaging. Medical imaging and radiology professionals work closely with physicians to provide the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, utilizing the least possible radiation dose.

OUR SERVICES

RADIOLOGY (X-RAY)
X-rays produce images of the structures inside the body such as bones, soft tissue, and organs. X-ray beams pass through the body in varying amounts which produce the X-ray images. For some types of X-rays, contrast medium is used to provide greater detail on the images.

COMPUTERIZED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)
A CT scan combines a series of X-ray views taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional images that may be viewed individually or combined to create 3D images. CT technology is very versatile in imaging many structures of the body and may be enhanced using contrast media.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)
MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body. These images may be combined to produce 3-D images that can be viewed from different angles. MRI is used to view nerves, muscles, ligaments, bones, and other tissues in the body. MRI exams do not involve any radiation exposure.

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY
A mammogram is an X-ray image specifically for breast tissue. Mammography plays a key role in early breast cancer detection and helps decrease breast cancer deaths. The images are used by a radiologist to detect any changes or abnormalities. Mammography is used for both screening and diagnostic purposes. Frequency of mammography procedures depends on an individual’s age and risk of breast cancer.  3D tomography services are available in select locations.

ULTRASOUND (SONOGRAPHY)
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures within the body. The images provide information that’s valuable in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions. Ultrasounds are used to view the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, and other organs, in addition to examining the fetus during pregnancy. An ultrasound does not involve any radiation exposure.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE
Nuclear medicine procedures use small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose a variety of diseases. Radioactive material is introduced into the body and accumulates in the area of interest. The radioactive material gives off energy in the form of gamma rays that are detected by a camera and converted into images. Physicians can collect images of function throughout the entire body, uncovering abnormalities that might otherwise go undetected.

INTERVENTIONAL RADIOGRAPHY
Interventional radiography specializes in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. This includes the use of X-rays, CT scans, and other imaging technology to evaluate and treat diseases non-surgically. Today, many conditions that once required surgery can be treated non-surgically which results in less risk, less pain, and less recovery time compared to open surgery.

DUAL-ENERGY X-RAY ABSORPTIOMETRY (DEXA)
Also called bone densitometry, DEXA uses a small amount of ionizing radiation to produce images of bony structures, typically of the lower spine and hips, for the measurement of bone loss. DEXA is effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss.
