da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System

Get back to what matters most

When you need surgery, you want to get through it so that you can get back to your life. We want that for you, too. It’s why Intuitive brought together world-renowned experts in minimally invasive surgery, robotic technology, and human-to-machine interaction. In 1999, Intuitive launched the da Vinci surgical system which became one of the first robotic-assisted surgical systems to gain clearance.

Today, after more than 6 million surgeries globally, Intuitive continue to innovate to improve the surgical systems, training, and support for surgeons, hospitals and care teams to help patients like you get back to what matters most.

Da Vinci surgical systems are cleared by applicable regulatory agencies for use in a number of different procedures. After discussing all options with your doctor, only you and your doctor can determine whether surgery with da Vinci is appropriate for your situation.

Your surgeon in control

The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console.

The da Vinci system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion. The da Vinci vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area. The instrument size makes it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions.

Surgeon Console

The surgeon console is where your surgeon sits during the procedure, has a crystal-clear 3DHD view of your anatomy, and controls the instruments. The tiny instruments are “wristed” and move like a human hand, but with a far greater range of motion.

Patient Cart

The patient-side cart is positioned near the patient on the operating table. It is where the instruments used during the operation move in real time in response to your surgeon’s hand movements at the surgeon console.

Vision Cart

The vision cart makes communication between the components of the system possible and provides a screen for the care team to view the operation.

GENERAL SURGERY

Conditions of the abdomen and digestive tract
Within your abdomen are vital organs that make it possible for you to convert food into energy and nutrients to fuel your body. The organs of your digestive tract include your stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and intestines. When conditions affecting your digestive tract lower your quality of life, and if lifestyle changes, medicines, and other options don’t improve your symptoms, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Robotic-assisted abdominal procedures:

  • Bariatric surgery
  • Gallbladder surgery
  • Inguinal hernia repair
  • Ventral hernia repair
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Acid reflux disease surgery (nissen fundoplication)
  • Stomach surgery (gastrectomy)
  • Pancreas surgery (pancreatectomy)
  • Small bowel surgery
  • Spleen surgery (splenectomy)

Talk with your doctor if you have any additional questions about these procedures.

Urology

Urologic conditions
The urology specialty covers conditions of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive system. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, bladder, and associated connective tissues and muscles. The male reproductive system encompasses the prostate gland, penis, testicles, and associated connective structures. Conditions that cause problems of these systems include, but are not limited to, enlarged prostate, benign tumors, and cancer and may require medical attention. In the case of cancer or when lifestyle changes, medicine, and other options do not ease symptoms of other conditions, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Robotic-assisted urologic procedures

  • Prostatectomy (prostate surgery)
  • Partial and Total Nephrectomy (kidney surgery)
  • Pyeloplasty (surgery to relieve kidney blockage)
  • Cyst Removal (surgery to remove cyst from kidney)
  • Cystectomy (bladder surgery)
  • Ureteral Implantation (fix the tubes that connect the bladder to the kidneys)

Talk with your doctor if you have any additional questions about these procedures.

Gynecologic

Gynecologic conditions
The gynecology specialty covers conditions of the internal female reproductive system, which includes the uterus (womb), ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. When your reproductive system develops a problem, it can affect many aspects of your health and quality of life. Gynecologic conditions such as severe pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, and cancer are common and may require medical care. When lifestyle changes, medicine, and other options do not ease your symptoms, your doctor may suggest surgery.

Robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures

  • Hysterectomy for benign conditions
  • Hysterectomy for cancer
  • Pelvic organ prolapse surgery
  • Myomectomy
  • Endometriosis resection

Talk with your doctor if you have any additional questions about these procedures.
